Common cures for winter blues in the city of five seasons

Fun and affordable actives can be hard to find during the winter. Between cold temperatures and high prices for just about everything it can be hard to get a break from homework and studying for finals. Cedar Rapids however has a wide variety free of low-cost actives for students throughout the year. 

The Cedar Rapids Art Museum has free admission for all Kirkwood students with a student I.D. as well as free art activities for children. The National Czech and Slovak Museum offers $5 student and military tickets and hosts many cultural events throughout the year. 

Wickiup Hill Learning Center has seasonal free and low-cost nature actives. Visitors can pick the activities that best fit their interest. This winter there will be a $10 class geared toward teaching adults and children how to kayak with the classes being held at Bender pool.

The Eastern Iowa Observatory and Learning Center at Palisades Kepler Park hosts monthly presentations that are open to the public.

Libraries are another resource for free activities. Many libraries allow people to check DVD’s out for up to a week at a time without charge my libraries offer children’s actives and story time for those who need a break. 

Marcus Theaters’ cheapest days for students are Tuesdays and Thursdays. Tuesdays anyone can buy a ticket for $5 with some snack prices reduced as well. On Thursdays student tickets with a student ID are $6.

The Collins Road Theater offers $5 tickets for their standard non-recliner seats on Tuesdays. The AMC Classic Theater at Westdale also offers a discount on Tuesdays. 

Applebees offers half price appetizers on some of its options after 9 p.m. Buffalo Wild Wings offers two for the price of one on their traditional wings on Tuesdays.

For those looking for a group activity, Cedar Rapids has many bowling alleys. Westdale Bowling Center and Lazar Tag offers laser tag games at $5 per person with each game lasting 12 minutes.

Lancer Lanes offers two hours of cosmic bowling on Friday nights for $10 and that includes shoe rental starting at 9 p.m.
