Outstanding Students

Makayla Miller

Q: Where are you from? (city, state)

A: Belle Plaine, Iowa

Q: Why did you choose Kirkwood?

A: I chose Kirkwood because I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do right after I graduated high school and I knew that I could start here to get my general education classes done with reasonable tuition costs.

Q: What is your major and how did you choose it?

A: My major is elementary education. I chose it after taking a career decision making class at Kirkwood because at the time, I did not know what I wanted to do, and that class really helped me to understand where my passion and interest is.

Q: What has been your proudest moment at Kirkwood?

A: I have two proudest moments. My first one is being on the dean’s list all throughout my college years at Kirkwood and being nominated for the Outstanding Student Award two years in a row.

Q: What are your plans after Kirkwood?

A: After I finished my last semester at Kirkwood, in the fall of 2020, I transferred to the University of Iowa to continue my education and to complete my bachelor’s degree in elementary education.

Q: What inspires or motivates you?

A: My dreams and goals for my life inspire and motivate me. I have goals set for where I want to go after I get my degree and what grade level I want to teach. I think by setting goals, it can help you to stay intrigued to reach them and to continue moving forward and stay motivated.

Q: Tell us about who you are outside of Kirkwood – hobbies, family, other interests, etc.

A: Outside of Kirkwood I love to spend time with my family and go to my younger sisters sporting events. I also enjoy watching movies and doing activities outside such as hunting, walking, and playing with my dog.

Q: What does be named an Outstanding Student mean to you?

A: To me, being named an outstanding student is being academically disciplined by studying hard and focusing on my classes. It also means being motivated to succeed and inspired to continue my education at a higher level.
