Outstanding Students

Taylor Bruns

Q: Where are you from? (city, state)

A: Marion, Iowa

Q: Why did you choose Kirkwood?

A: Kirkwood was a blessing in disguise for me. I started my college journey at the University of Northern Iowa. Not too long into my first semester at UNI, I knew it wasn’t the right fit for me at that point in my life. After completing a semester at UNI, I moved back home (Marion) and decided to attend Kirkwood to continue my teaching degree. At the time, Kirkwood was the best option simply because it was close to home and affordable. Little did I know I would be so happy here.

Q: What is your major and how did you choose it?

A: Early Childhood Education- I knew at a young age that I wanted to teach. Around the age of 16, I started working with young kids and knew that was my niche.

Q: What has been your proudest moment at Kirkwood?

A: Having the opportunity to tutor. I have tutored five different women who are also earning degrees in the education field. It has been very rewarding.

Q: What are your plans after Kirkwood?

A: I intend to go back to UNI (at some point) and earn my bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education. I plan to open my own child development center and/or teach preschool.

Q: What inspires or motivates you?

A: My desire to make a difference in the world.
Q: Tell us about who you are outside of Kirkwood – hobbies, family, other interests, etc.

A: I love my family more than anything- I am the second oldest of five children. I love to shop, play board games, and cuddle with my pup, Baxter.

Q: What does be named an Outstanding Student mean to you?

A: It is a good reminder of all the hard work I have put into my education. Whenever I reflect on my education journey, I find myself comparing my accomplishments to others my age, as we all do. I often feel ashamed that my college experience doesn’t fit the “traditional” four-year window. As if I’ve had “all this time” and just haven’t achieved as much as others. Regardless of the time it takes, I am devoted to earning my degree. As a first-generation college student, I am so very grateful for the opportunity I have to expand my knowledge, skills, and passion in the education field.

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to add?

A: I would like to thank the faculty at Kirkwood for being nothing but the best!
