Gun control is not the only answer

The Second Amendment is one of the most debated rights of Americans today. With the increase in mass shootings it is easy to see why people are wanting more gun control and/or the outlawing of guns in general. However, I believe there are two main issues with taking away guns.

The first issue is how mass shootings are defined or lack there of. Officially the United States government does not have set parameters for what counts as a mass shooting and what does not. Instead the court system has to look at third party groups such as the Gun Violence Archive. The Gun Violence Archive defines mass shootings as “four or more (are) shot or killed, not including the shooter.”

The problem with this definition is that anyone hit by a bullet intentional or not would be counted into rather or not it is a mass shooting.

The United States of America will never be invaded by another country. The reason as to why is easy. There are approximately 89 guns per 100 people in the United States according to pewsocialtrends.org, which more than any other country by almost double.

With a population of over 300 million people, and almost a 1 to 1 ratio of guns per person, we are in no way lacking in armed citizens.

There are no nations that have an army strong enough to hold a candle to the American people without using the taboo practices of nuclear or chemical warfare.

While arming citizens for war may sound barbaric, this practice has been in use for hundreds of years going further back than the  “ASSIZE OF ARMS” (1181) which made all village men learn and practice to shoot a bow in order to protect the kingdom if need be.

It is these reasons as to why control and the possibility of completely outlawing guns is a bad idea. Instead of control what guns are and are not allowed we need to reform the buying process.

By implementing stricter background checks, and making psych checks a requirement it would be a start to making reforms in the right way.
