Everyone has a different career path. Some students hope to land high-ranking, world-class jobs, while others prefer working in small businesses. Students at Kirkwood Community College recently interviewed one another about what interests them in their chosen majors.
KaVarez Coleman, a first-year Kirkwood student majoring in HVAC installation, said he already knows what he wants to do after graduation.
“I chose this major because I plan on doing HVAC when I graduate from Kirkwood,” Coleman said.
As he continues in the program, Coleman has been taking classes that directly support his goal.
“I’m mostly taking classes that will help me pursue my major,” he said. “It could help me later with money and help me understand how HVAC works, so I know what I’m doing in my career in the future.”
Another first-year student, Sierra Werling, is majoring in interior design and architecture.
“I chose this major because it’s really interesting,” Werling said. “It gives me an opportunity to be creative and challenges me at the same time.”
She said she enjoys the variety within the field.
“There isn’t just one job or one interest,” Werling said. “There are plenty of different paths you can choose depending on your personality and what you like.”
Werling is currently taking Historical Interior and Architecture, SketchUp, Introduction to Interior Design, and Architectural Plans and Specifications.
“I’m taking these classes because they are required for my major, but also because they’ll help me grow and learn for my future pathway,” she said.
Gage Grady, a second-year digital arts major, said his interest in design began early.
“I chose digital arts because I’ve always enjoyed working with Photoshop and Premiere Pro,” Grady said. “I also found out I enjoy photography and marketing.”
Grady is taking Audio Production, Layout Design, Social Media and Business and Commercial Studio Lighting.
“These classes are required for my major, but when I graduate, I can get a job that falls under the digital arts umbrella,” he said. “I’m thinking about photography, video editing or marketing.”
Students at Kirkwood come from a wide range of backgrounds and bring many different interests with them. Whether those interests are creative, technical or somewhere in between, one question remains: What’s your path?
