On April 1, Kirkwood Community College women’s basketball head coach Kim Muhl announced his retirement.

After 37 seasons of pure excellence, Muhl has engraved himself as one of the most successful coaches in sports history.

His career as a head coach consists of a 1,108-178 record (.862 winning percentage), resulting in 24 national championship appearances, nine of which Kirkwood won. This has put him in a territory that only a few collegiate coaches have even come close to.

Of his 37 seasons, Muhl has coached his teams to at least 20 wins. To put that into perspective, eight of the 12 teams in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference finished with fewer than 20 wins for the 2025-2026 season.

Kirkwood’s season ended in March, when the Eagles and Muhl finished second in the nation, falling just short of their 10th national championship.

Muhl’s success has seen him inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, one of the highest honors for anyone associated within the sport.
