It was a pretty relaxed week for Kirkwood in terms of game play, but it led to another impressive week for all sports. The men’s golf team took home the NJCAA Fall Preview first place trophy. While women’s volleyball took down a ranked conference opponent. The softball team’s preseason games have officially begun, this week playing a cross town competitor.
Eagles Weekly is a weekly article that summarizes all six of Kirkwood’s athletics. In these articles you can read summaries of each game, and which student-athletes have been shining the most. At the bottom of the article, two athletes are chosen for the “Eagles of the Week” honor which is given to the two Eagles who shined the brightest for that edition.
Women’s Volleyball:

Kirkwood Community College 3 at Des Moines Area Community College 0
The volleyball team’s one and only game this week took place against conference rival, No. 14 Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC). This proved to be a relatively easy match, as DMACC did not get to even 20 points in each of the three sets. Sophomore outside hitter Carly Wazac led the team in kills, tallying 12. While freshman setter Katie Scheckel continues to impress, amassing 20 assists in the matchup. Six different players had at least four digs, showing how evenly distributed the defense was. Sophomore middle hitter Madalyn Boyer had herself three service aces.

NJCAA Fall Preview, first place finish
The Eagles began their golf season this week by traveling to Plymouth, Indiana. There, they competed at the NJCAA Fall Preview golf outing. They competed with schools across the nation, 20 in total. Kirkwood showed off a glimpse of how dominant they can be this year. Out of any of the 20 teams, Kirkwood was the only school to shoot under par. Not to mention how they were way under par, the team shot a -17 across three rounds. Returning sophomore Isaiah Zoske led the way for the Eagles, shooting -8 under par. Finishing second in the entire tournament, only one stroke behind first place. Sophomores Ted Sargeant and Dean Roberts both finished -3 under par, the same goes for freshman AJ Sposato.
Softball:
September 6
Kirkwood Community College at Mount Mercy College
The softball team began their intense preseason on Sunday against NAIA school Mount Mercy College. Since this is a preseason game, scores are not recorded and made known to the public.
Eagles of the Week
Isaiah Zoske: 8 under par. Second place finish.
After finishing No. 18 in the nation last year, sophomore Isaiah Zoske started his sophomore year campaign on a hot note. He led the Eagles to a NJCAA Fall Preview first place finish, by ending eight under par. Zoske’s strong performance earned him an individual second place finish at the tournament. The Solon native finished sixth in the region last year, as he looks to add onto his already impressive résumé for the ‘26-’27 athletic season.
S Katie Scheckel: 1 M, 9 Kills, 20 Assists, 5 Digs
The Eagles only played one match this week, but freshman setter Katie Scheckel continues to impress for the Eagles. In this one match, she led the Eagles with 20 assists, while also compiling nine kills alongside five assists. Volleyball head coach David Brown referred to Scheckel as the swiss army knife of the team, and her performance this week showed why. Scheckel can do it all.
