A trend that has been common so far for the Eagles this year has been dominance, and this week has been no different. Volleyball goes undefeated in six games against elite competition, and golf finishes top three in the Mustang Fall Invite.
Eagles Weekly is a weekly article that summarizes all six of Kirkwood’s athletics. In these articles you can read summaries of each game, and which student-athletes have been shining the most. At the bottom of the article, two athletes are chosen for the “Eagles of the Week” honor which is given to the two Eagles who shined the brightest for that edition.
Women’s Volleyball:
September 8
Kirkwood Community College 3 at Iowa Lakes Community College 0
The Eagles began their busy week by traveling to Estherville, Iowa to take on Iowa Lakes Community College for a conference matchup. Kirkwood would comfortably win this match 3-0, as the Lakers never scored above 20 points in any of the three sets. Sophomore outside hitters Carly Wazac and Yasmine Sell led the team in kills, finishing with 12 and 10 respectively. Freshman hitter Katie Scheckel had 18 assists and 10 digs to her name. Sophomore middle hitter Madalyn Boyer led the match in kills, totalling seven.
September 10
Central Community College 0 at Kirkwood Community College 3
Kirkwood would then start their first of three days of games on Thursday, and took on Central Community College for a conference matchup. Yet again, Kirkwood had an effortless 3-0 victory. The Raiders played a good first set, but would ultimately lose to the Eagles 22-25. After that, Kirkwood won the next two sets in blowout fashion. Wazac led Kirkwood with 14 kills in only 20 attempts, good for a .550 kill percentage. Setters Scheckel and sophomore Avery Knoop finished with 21 and 17 assists respectively. Freshman middle hitter Jozie Lahr led the Eagles with seven blocks.
September 11
Kirkwood Community College 3 vs. Lincoln Land Community College 0
This matchup against Lincoln Land Community College was the first matchup for day one of a two day tournament hosted at Kirkwood. It was a quick and easy 3-0 sweep for Kirkwood, as the Loggers did not even amass 15 kills in any of the three sets. Freshman outside hitter Bri Clark led the Eagles with 10 kills. While Scheckel led in both assists, 16, and digs, 10.
Kirkwood Community College 3 vs. Johnson County Community College 0
Going into this match, Johnson County Community College was ranked as the No. 3 team in the nation, and would be the highest ranked team Kirkwood has played so far this season. In a tough three set match, Kirkwood persevered each set and earned a hard fought sweep. Wazac and Clark again led the Eagles in kills totaling 13 and 12 apiece. Scheckel continued her excellence on the offensive games, and earned herself 26 total assists. Wazac and Lahr led the Eagles in blocks, both getting four.
September 12
Kirkwood Community College 3 vs. Heartland Community College 2
The first matchup of day two against No. 6 Heartland Community College would end up being the toughest so far for the Eagles. As the reigning National Champions took Kirkwood to a five-set match. Including a rigorous third set, where Kirkwood ended up taking it 29-27. Wazac, sophomore outside hitter Sydney Brandmeyer and Scheckel all ended with double digit kills. Notably, Scheckel earned herself her first triple double as she amassed 11 kills, 31 assists and 14 digs. Knoop finished with 24 assists. Sophomore outside hitter Abbie Staats finished the match with 13 digs. Boyer had seven kills.
Kirkwood Community College 3 vs. Illinois Central College 0
After a long and competitive match just 30 minutes prior, the Eagles set on against No. 13 Illinois Central College. The Cougars came attacking on all cylinders, and narrowly lost the first set 23-25. Kirkwood would take over the next two, and win the match 3-0. Clark led the Eagles with 10 kills. Knoop and Scheckel combined for 40 assists. While Staats amassed a notable 21 digs.

Sep. 12-13
Mustang Fall Classic
This weekend the Eagles made a short road trip to Hunters Ridge Golf Course in Marion for the Mustang Fall Classic. The Eagles would send out two teams of five golfers, an “A” team and a “B” team. Both teams performed exceptionally, as the “B” team finished second in the tournament with a score of 15-over-par. While the “A” team finished third with a score of 22-over-par. Sophomore Ryan Lynch had great rounds, and finished second individually with a three-under-par. Freshman AJ Sposato also impressed, finishing third with two-under-par. Freshman Jack Rogers finished sixth, with one-over-par.

Sep. 10
Kirkwood’s softball team continued their fall scrimmages, and took on Illinois Central College. Since this was a scrimmage, stats and the score was not recorded.
Sep. 11
Kirkwood’s baseball team began their fall scrimmages on Friday, and played against Kellogg Community College and Parkland College. Since these were scrimmages, stats and scores were not recorded.
Eagles of the Week
Ryan Lynch: Three under par. Second place finish.
Last year Ryan Lynch was Kirkwood’s fourth highest rated golfer, 50th overall in the Nation. This year, he is looking to take the next step forward. As he finished second individually in the Mustang Fall Classic this weekend, and competed with golfers who attend four-year schools. His score of three under par is an encouraging sign, and leading a talented Kirkwood golf team is a testament to his success.
Carly Wazac: 17 M, 60 K, 3.53 K/S, 1 B/S,
After finishing her freshman season as a second-team All-American, Carly Wazac has taken a big step forward in her sophomore year. Kirkwood had one of the toughest schedules of the year this week. They had to play six total matches, including three ranked teams. One of which was ranked third in the nation, and another was the National Champion just a season ago. Wazac diligently led the Eagles against the difficult competition, and amassed 60 total blocks and led her team to six victories. This is Wazac’s second Eagle of the Week honor.
