This was an exhilarating week for Kirkwood Athletics. Golf won a tournament, and had two individual first place finishes. The Volleyball team remained undefeated with three consecutive sweeps this week. While Baseball and Softball continue their fall seasons as they play teams from around the nation.
Eagles Weekly is a weekly article that summarizes all six of Kirkwood’s athletics. In these articles you can read summaries of each game, and which student-athletes have been shining the most. At the bottom of the article, two athletes are chosen for the “Eagles of the Week” honor which is given to the two Eagles who shined the brightest for that edition.
Women’s Volleyball:
September 23
Kirkwood Community College 3 at Northeast Community College 0
The Eagles traveled to Norfolk, Nebraska for their first game of the week to take on Northeast Community College for a conference matchup. It was a rather comfortable sweep for Kirkwood, as Northeast only scored as high as 15 in each of the three sets. Sophomore outside hitters Carly Wazac and Sydney Brandmeyer led the Eagles with 12 kills a piece. Sophomore setter Katie Scheckel led the way with 25 assists. Defensive specialists Abbie Staats and Gabbi Smith shined as they combined for 27 digs. Smith also recorded four service aces.

Kirkwood Community College 3 vs. Kansas City Kansas Community College 0
The Eagles then traveled to Boone, Iowa to compete in the DMACCTour (Des Moines Area Community College tournament). Kirkwood’s first match would be against No. 9 Kansas City Kansas Community College. The Blue Devils gave Kirkwood everything they had, playing three close sets, but would ultimately end up getting swept by the Eagles. Sophomore outside hitter Yasmine Sell would lead the way for Kirkwood, leading the team with 12 kills. Freshman setter Katie Scheckel had a strong match as she put up 24 assists and eight digs, both leading the team. Freshman middle hitter Jozie Lahr gave, and led the Eagles with an impressive seven blocks.
Kirkwood Community College 3 vs. Sauk Valley Community College 0
For their second match of the day, Kirkwood would this time face off against Sauk Valley Community College. The Eagles would perform their third consecutive sweep of the week, and again did so in comfortable fashion. Wazac led the team with 10 kills, while Sell finished with nine herself. Scheckel and sophomore setter Avery Knoop combined for 30 total assists. Sophomore defensive specialist Abbie Staats put up 11 digs. Leading the way in service aces was freshman defensive specialist Grace Knock with four.

September 21-22
Duane Chanay Classic
The Eagles continue their fall season, and this week they would start off by traveling to East Moline, Illinois for the Duane Chanay Classic. Kirkwood ended up in second place for the tournament with a one over par score, one away from being tied for first. This effort was led by returning sophomore Ted Sargeant, as he would put up an impressive eight under par performance, winning first place individually. Freshmen Jack Rogers and AJ Sposato ended up tied for third place individually, both shooting one under par.
September 26-27
Wartburg Fall Invite
Their second meet of the week, Kirkwood would take the drive north to Waverly and compete in the Wartburg Fall Invite. Only 18 holes of golf were played, because day two was canceled due to rain. The Eagles sent out two teams for this meet, an “A” and a “B” squad. Fittingly, the teams respectively finished in first and second place. The “A” team put up an enormous 17 under par performance. All five golfers were even par and below. While the “B” team shot even. Sargeant would yet again put up a strong performance, this time shooting seven under par and yet again ending up first place individually. Sophomore Isaiah Zoske ended up tied for second, golfing five under par. Rogers would finish in fifth place with a three under par. While sophomores Harry Downton and Chase Jahde tied for sixth place, both shooting two under par. Sophomore Ryan Lynch tied for eigth with a one under par. Sophomore Dean Roberts, and freshmen Christian Cloyd and Sposato tied for 13th, shooting even.

Eagles of the Week
Ted Sargeant: two first place finishes, -13 under par across two meets
The Eagles competed in just two golf tournaments this week, and Ted Sargeant finished in first place for each tournament. With an eight under par performance for the first meet, and a seven under par performance for the second. Sergeant is coming off a freshman season where he won ICCAC Freshman of the Year honors. He has picked up right where he left off, and his performance this week is a testament to that. This is Sargeant’s first Eagle of the Week honor.
Yasmine Sell: six sets, 3.5 kills per set, 0.5 blocks per set, 22.5 points
Kirkwood played only nine sets this week, of course winning them all, but Yasmine Sell played in only six of those sets. In just those two matches she made her presence known. The Eagles were faced against a top-ten team in Kansas City Kansas Community College, and Sell marked a season high with 12 kills. Leading Kirkwood to a triumphant sweep. Later that day she would put up another nine kills, being an important contributor. This is Sell’s first Eagle of the Week honor.
