Come to town for “Urinetown: The Musical”, this fall’s production at Kirkwood Community College.
The satirical dark comedy tells the story of the Urine Good Company, a corporation that monetizes society’s bathrooms.
The performance is directed by members of Kirkwood’s arts and humanities faculty and features more than 30 students in the cast.
Music director Allison Holmes-Bendixen said the musical was chosen for several reasons that make it a good fit for students.
“It’s contemporary, it’s definitely a satire, there are big dance numbers, and it has a large cast, which is another reason we selected it,” she said. “This musical was a big opportunity for students to work together and experience contrasting styles of performance.”
Cast members said there is a strong sense of support among the group, with students showing dedication and presence despite busy schedules of classes and jobs. They credited the show’s reliable rehearsal structure and preparation for helping them stay organized.
Holmes-Bendixen said the production is accessible to students of all backgrounds, whether they are theater majors or have no previous acting experience.
The show also reflects close collaboration between the tech department, the music and orchestra departments and the acting ensemble.
“This story is relevant and told in a special way,” Holmes-Bendixen said. “It’s subversive and satirical, and the music helps set the tone. There are fun nods written in and spoofs of other musicals.”
