Kirkwood Civic Academy encourages engagement

Kirkwood Club Corner

How did it all begin?

Kirkwood Civic Academy was created in response to the growing need for student participation in civic engagement. There has been a noticeable decline in voter engagement among our age group, along with a lack of safe, structured spaces where students can discuss pressing social and political issues. This club exists to fill that gap by creating an inclusive environment for meaningful dialogue and action.

What’s the mission?

At Kirkwood Civic Academy, our purpose is to inspire greater civic engagement among students by promoting responsibility and empowering members to contribute to a more just and honest society — both within the Kirkwood community and beyond. We strive to build new connections and meaningful experiences that support growth in civic learning, understanding and commitment.

Why should students join?

Students should join to help clear the “mind fog” that comes from everything happening in the world today. Kirkwood Civic Academy provides a safe, organized and non-argumentative space to talk about tough topics. Members have opportunities to: Engage in meaningful discussions, volunteer and connect with local organizations, collaborate with other clubs on dialogues and campus events and learn from advocates, legislators and community leaders. And honestly have a fun, welcoming time while doing important work.

How can new members get started?

New members can get involved by attending our weekly meetings or by joining our Band group chat.

When and where do you meet?

Every Friday from 2:30-3:30 p.m. in Iowa Hall, Room 3042.

What happens at meetings?

A lot! We regularly bring in advocates, legislators, senators and activists to speak with us. We also collaborate with other campus organizations, including: Kirkwood Black Student Union for Black History Month initiatives and dialogues; Phi Theta Kappa on student success, scholarships and barriers to education; and Global Student Association on dialogues such as Gaza and Israel and community-building events like bingo.

We are constantly building new partnerships and planning impactful events.

Anything else students should know?

We have many exciting events coming up, including: a dialogue on immigration and the impact of ICE; Artivists of Iowa helping students turn political frustration into art; visits from legislators, senators and activists; and additional volunteer opportunities and community events throughout the city.

Kirkwood Civic Academy is a place to learn, speak up, connect and take action.
