The library is YOUR place for room to work, a place to meet, materials to borrow, online resources, or help with research or citation systems like MLA and APA. 8. Need More Space? – Feeling trapped in close quarters? We have room, large tables, and whiteboards. We have extras like our Parent-Child Carrel for students with young children and our popular book section. Our second floor is quiet study and our reservable individual/group study rooms. If you’re with a group & need to talk please use a study room or come downstairs. Take the elevator or stairs within the library.
7. Need a Computer? – The library has desktop computers you can use. You can borrow laptop computers for short term use, print in either black and white or color, or scan. We have most computer programs you’ll need for your classes on our machines.
6. What’s APA/MLA? – Have to do a research paper? Your instructor will normally tell you they want it in APA or MLA. These are systems to give credit to where you find information. They are similar but differ on details. We recommend stopping by the library in person if you need citation help because it’s a LOT easier for both of us, but you can find help online: guides.kirkwood.edu/citation
5. Need A Good Read? – While most of the library’s collection is to support assignments, we have popular books. There are new lists of different types of books (like romance or science fiction). Ask at the desk if you want a book and can’t find it.
4. Want to Watch a Movie? Or Research Videos? – We offer a DVD collection and a video database of documentaries and regular movies. Scan our database list for Kanopy: guides.kirkwood.edu/kanopy
3. Keeping Up With the Library? – Our online library is our website (guides.kirkwood.edu), Facebook (kirkwoodlibraries), YouTube (kirkwoodlibraries), and blog (kirkwoodlibrary.wordpress.com).
2. Writing a Research Paper or Speech? –You need a library database! A database is where you search for scholarly or peer-reviewed articles. EBSCO is a database. Your instructor may say EBSCO in directions when they mean any library database. Today the library has A LOT more databases.
