Strike up fun with free Student Life activities 

Every Tuesday, Kirkwood Community College students can take advantage of free bowling at May City Bowl, located just 11 minutes from the main campus. 

The ongoing event is part of the many free activities sponsored through Student Life and any student with a current EagleCard can participate. 

“We have this partnership with May City Bowl, along with other partnerships such as free ice skating on Fridays, albeit the free ice is not held nearly as consistently as free bowling on Tuesdays,” said Student Life Coordinator Emily Grace. “We also have a ton of other partnerships and initiatives for students across our campuses, and we’ve been doing those initiatives since COVID.” 

Grace Stated “It is fun watching students improve throughout the year at the various activities. Sometimes, we visit students at May City and they’re bowling an average of 89 per game, and then we visit them five weeks later, and they’re suddenly now bowling an average of 170 per game, so it’s really cool seeing them evolve their craft,”   

Royce Thompson, psychology major, said last year the staff at May City Bowl was welcoming and accommodating, and since then, his bowling group has grown in numbers.  

“We started as a small group of three; now we go with between seven and 10 people, depending on the week. It’s a great place to meet our fellow students and see them repeatedly,” he said. 

“Our group talks to two or three other groups every week while there. We’ve kept up going to bowling every week this year, too, and going to other events at least once every other week, usually more,” said Thompson. 

Students can bowl for free every Tuesday from 3-5 p.m. and are allowed two games. May City Bowl is located at 1648 Trent St SW, Cedar Rapids.
