Library due dates: Everything students need to know

With all the items available at the Kirkwood Library, it can be difficult to know how long you can keep something you’ve borrowed. The following information should help clear up how long you can keep things borrowed from the library.

All of us are busy and it can be challenging to find time for reading. That’s why, whether you are a student, faculty, or staff member, you don’t have to worry about returning books until the end of the semester. This means if you checked any books out this fall, they aren’t due until finals end on Dec. 11. The end of semester due date includes almost everything like DVDs, most scientific calculators and Wi-Fi hotspots.

You might be wondering, “what happens if I check out a book a day before the last day of the semester and don’t have time to read it.” That’s no problem. You can easily renew the item online using your k-number and password or contact our friendly circulation staff for help.

There are a few exceptions to the “end of semester” rule. Laptops are due back 48 hours from when they are initially checked out. Additionally, you’ll have to wait a week before you can borrow another one. We only have a few to lend, and limiting check out times to 48 hours once per week helps us try to lend laptops to anyone who needs them.

Reserve books that instructors bring to the library are another exception. These are often textbooks for a particular class. These materials must be used within the library for up to 4 hours at a time. If you are unsure whether a textbook is on reserve, ask your professor, or stop in and ask us at the circulation desk.

We hope this information is helpful. There are very few exceptions to these rules, and we’ll always let you know the due dates of any material you borrow from us. If you have any questions about any due dates, or anything else we can help with, stop in or give us a call at (319) 398-5696.
