Blood-typing event highlights importance of donating

Skye Kelley of ImpactLife determines the blood type of a student at the free blood-typing event in Iowa Hall on April 1.

On April 1, Kirkwood Community College partnered with ImpactLife to host a free blood typing awareness event aimed at educating students, faculty and staff on the importance of knowing their blood type and understanding the life-saving impact of blood donation. The event was held in Iowa Hall.

A total of 38 individuals participated, including 15 males (39.5%) and 23 females (60.5%).

O+ was the most common blood type identified, with 20 participants (52.6%), followed by A+ with six participants (15.8%).

Additional blood types recorded included A- (7.9%), O- (7.9%), B+ (7.9%) and B- (5.3%). The event served as an awareness initiative that helped participants better understand their own blood type while reinforcing the importance of blood donation in supporting emergency care, surgeries and community health needs.

ImpactLife will be back on campus on April 14, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in Nielson Hall, Room 237D, for a blood drive. Walk-ins are welcome.
