Support Pride Club, sweeten your day

Kirkwood Community College finals got you stressed out? Take a break and enjoy a sweet treat April 15 or 17 by heading down to the Pride Bake Sale. Not only will you be satisfying your sweet tooth with homemade goods, but you’ll be helping fund club activities and events for Kirkwood’s Pride Club.

Kirkwood students interested in the Bake Sale can stop by the second-floor lobby in Cedar Hall on April 15, or the second floor of Iowa Hall on April 17 anytime between 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Don’t fret if you miss this year’s bake sale: The Pride Club will surely be hosting one next fall, too. But if you can’t wait that long to get your sugar fix, make sure to stop by.

The Pride Bake Sale this spring is one of the many events the Pride Club hosts annually to help raise funds for Pride members to attend the Midwest Bisexual Lesbian Gay Trans Asexual College Conference in the fall.

The MBLGTACC is a conference tailored for queer college kids all around the Midwest, and happens once in the fall for 3 days. The conference not only provides a community space for queer students but provides an interactive workshop and other activities and allows students to learn about the experiences of other queer students.

Many Pride Club members are excited about the MBLGTACC conference, including Cyrus Williams, a psychology major at Kirkwood. “MBLGTACC is one of the more fun conventions I’ve ever gone to. Being in a space with so many LGBTQ+ people is comforting and makes me feel welcomed.”

Devyn DuCharme, an Associate of Science student at Kirkwood and Pride Club member, enjoyed the workshop and the experience to grow. “The breakout sessions were my favorite part in 2024. Each session I went to had its own individual appeal, but all were informative and enjoyable. I learned a lot from the breakouts I attended and deeply appreciate the opportunity to have participated in them.”

Williams expresses a similar opinion on the workshops at MBLGTACC. “I enjoyed the wide variety of workshops and meetings that you can attend, they provided many interesting perspectives.”

Kirkwood Pride is an on-campus organization that provides a safe outlet and place for both LGBTQIA+ folks and allies and promotes awareness, visibility and equality for all at Kirkwood Community College, regardless of gender orientation and sexuality. Pride Club meets every Tuesday during activity hour in the pride lounge in 2030 Iowa Hall and is always accepting new members or anyone who just wants to pop in and hang out. For more information on the Pride Club, events or activities, or the Pride Bake sale, feel free to reach out to pride@kirkwood.edu.

The Pride Club has gone to the MBLGTACC conference for the past few years and would like to continue to allow Kirkwood students this opportunity in the future. Just buying yourself a sweet treat will help fund future Pride Club activities.
