Seven answers from Kirkwood’s Sundberg Library

How can the library help me? We provide room to work, a place to meet, materials you can check out, online resources, help with research and with how to use MLA and APA.

Come in person or call Circulation about materials you have or want to check out (319-331-4392). Reach a librarian in person, by phone (319-398-5697), by text (319-774-6491), or by e-mail (library@kirkwood.edu).

What’s on the second floor? Our second floor is quieter study and has individual or group study rooms. You can reserve the rooms through the library website at least 24 hours ahead. If you’re going to talk please use a study room or come downstairs. All of the rooms now have Airtame screens and one room is set up as a basic video recording studio.

What’s a database? A database is a collection of scholarly or peer-reviewed articles. Some people think that EBSCO and database mean the same thing and your instructor may say EBSCO in your directions when they really mean any library database. Click on our A-Z Databases list on the library website to explore A LOT more databases. Find stuff from the New York Times to medical information to countries and food around the world and beyond! We even offer databases of videos (Kanopy) and music (Naxos): guides.kirkwood.edu/az.php

Do you need MLA or APA? After you’ve found information for your project the instructor will tell you they want it APA or MLA. Both citation systems help you give credit to where you found the information. They are similar, but differ a lot in the details. For citation questions we recommend coming to the reference desk in person because it’s a LOT easier. Find online help: guides.kirkwood.edu/citation

What books can you check out? The first floor has popular books, children’s books, and ELA books. Take either the elevator or stairs within the library to the second floor to find our non-fiction books. Access ebooks through our website. Most of the library’s collection is purchased to support assignments, but we try to have books for everyone to enjoy and if we don’t have what you want, ask!

What does the library have online besides its website? Follow our social media on Facebook (kirkwoodlibraries), YouTube (kirkwoodlibraries), and X/Twitter (@kirkwoodsmart) to keep up to date with the library, new books, and what’s going on. Most importantly follow our blog for all the latest library news: kirkwoodlibrary.wordpress.com. People especially love following Eggbert’s adventures as library mascot.

When is the library open? Monday-Thursday, 7:30 a.m.-11 p.m.; Friday, 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; Sunday, 3-8 p.m.; Online library available 24/7.
