In order to understand each other between people, we must communicate our feelings and emotions, our thoughts and desires, our dreams and goals. There are several ways to do it, but there is a very important one that we are taught from a very young age: through language. A single word can mean so many things, and not only because the words can have different meanings, but also because the word can sound similar or the same as another word in another language.
Have you ever wondered why immigrants refuse to lose the language they grew up with? That’s easy, because by losing knowledge of that language, a part of that person’s identity is lost. Furthermore, language is not only the way in which we can express ourselves, it is also the way in which we connect with the people around us. That is why for Hispanics, it is so important to know how to speak Spanish, because it connects us with our ancestors, or rather, with our family.
If you have ever seen “Coco,” you can notice that the bond that exists with the family is huge, and everyone seeks to take care of that bond and the legacy that bond leaves behind and since Spanish is the mother tongue of the patriarch, or matriarch, if Spanish were not spoken, continuing that legacy of family bonds would not be possible because it all comes down to the ability to communicate with your loved ones.
However, there is a large number of international students, foreign students or students with ancestry from other countries (other than the U.S.) who walk through the halls and speak other languages besides English, which for any visitor gives a feeling of familiarity, warmth and security because of the wide diversity that exists. That’s why keeping these aspects of our identity and culture is important, because it makes us connect with people like us.
Spanish translation: Para poder entendernos entre personas hay que comunicarnos, comunicar nuestros sentimientos y emociones, nuestros pensamientos y deseos, nuestros sueños y metas. Hay varias maneras de hacerlo, pero hay una muy importante que se nos enseña desde muy pequeños: mediante el lenguaje. Una sola palabra puede significar tantas cosas y no solo porque la palabras pueden tener distintos significados, sino también porque la palabra puede sonar parecida o igual a otra palabra en otro idioma.
¿Alguna vez te has preguntado por qué los inmigrantes se niegan a perder el idioma con el que crecieron? Eso es fácil, porque al perder el conocimiento de ese idioma se pierde una parte de la identidad de esa persona. Además, el lenguaje no es solo la manera en la que nos podemos expresar, también es la manera en la que nos conectamos con las personas de nuestro alrededor.
Es por eso que para los hispano-americanos es tan importante saber hablar español, porque nos conecta con nuestros antepasados, o mejor dicho, con nuestra familia. Si alguna vez has visto “Coco” puedes notar que el vínculo que existe con la familia es enorme, y todos buscan cuidar ese vínculo y el legado que deja ese vínculo, y ya que el español es la lengua madre del patriarca, o de la matriarca, si no se hablara español, continuar con ese legado de vínculos familiares no sería posible porque todo se reduce a la posibilidad de comunicarte con tus seres queridos.
Sin embargo, existe una extensa cantidad de alumnos internacionales, alumnos extranjeros o alumnos con ascendencia de otros países (además de la estadounidense) que caminan por los pasillos y hablan otros idiomas, además del inglés, que para cualquier visitante da un sentimiento de familiaridad, calidez y seguridad, gracias a la gran diversidad que existe. Es por eso que mantener estos aspectos de nuestra identidad y cultura es importante, porque nos hace conectar con personas como nosotros.
