Kirkwood Community College Student Life, Recreation and Wellness teams will be hosting the annual free flu shot event on Oct. 22 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the second floor of Iowa Hall. This event is designed to allow Kirkwood students to get vaccinated to protect them and their loved ones this flu season.
“We have a partnership with Mercy Clinic that provides the nurses and staff to come to campus to administer the shots to students,” said senior director of Student Engagement and Campus Life Seth VanderTuig.
Tony Busha-Ruiz, culinary arts major, said it was important for students who wanted to get their flu shot to have access to the vaccine. “I’ve had the flu in the winter before. It sucks until it goes away,”.
According to a 2024 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the flu vaccine has been shown to reduce the risk of going to the doctor for treatment of influenza by 40% to 60%. Every season millions contract the disease, with almost 10,000 patients dying of flu-related causes.
Flu could mean feeling bad and missing a few days of school or work, but it can also lead to more serious illnesses if left untreated.
“There is a bit of paperwork to fill out that the nurses help walk students through, then the flu shot. The entire process only takes a few minutes,” VanderTuig added.
