Campus food pantry provides vital support to students

Sam Carpenter, food pantry staff, stocks shelves at the main campus on Tuesday, Feb. 4.

As the spring semester kicks into gear, many first- and second-year college students may find themselves facing financial strain.

To help ease this burden, Kirkwood Community College offers a food pantry, providing essential resources for students, both at the main campus and at the regional center in Coralville.

Sam Carpenter, food pantry program specialist, has been working at the Kirkwood food pantry for six years.

He began his work there as part of a work study job when he was a student, and the college decided to maintain his employment after graduation due to his experience.

“I wasn’t certain about what it was I wanted to do at that point, but I loved the work I was doing here so I decided to just stay,” said Carpenter.

Carpenter said he welcomes all students to the food pantry. “Don’t be afraid, we don’t bite,” he said.

The majority of the food and personal items in the food pantry are donated. Carpenter said he thinks one reason a lot of students don’t use the food pantry is because they feel like they are taking from those in need. But, he added, he keeps track of what comes in and goes out and is able to replace products as needed.

Carpenter said some of the most popular items are soaps and dental hygiene supplies. The pantry also provides students with clothing. During this time of year, specifically, hats and gloves are available for the taking.

Easton Pfiffner, journalism major, said he has found the food pantry extremely useful. “Instead of going to the store and spending money on groceries, every week I can just go to the food pantry and stock up. Groceries can be expensive and I have other things I am paying for right now,” said Pfiffner.

Pfiffner said he recommends the food pantry for all students because of the financial stress relief it provides. Pfiffner praised the work done by Carpenter, saying, “He is always very welcoming and on top of his game when I go there. He makes things run smoothly.”

The food pantry on the main campus is located on the third floor of Iowa Hall. The pantry at the regional center in Coralville is located on the lower level in Room 024. Students can visit the pantry once a week, but exceptions can be made if needed..
