Campus events build community and connection

Getting involved on campus can make a big difference in your college experience. At Kirkwood Community College, attending student events not only helps you meet new people but also supports your health, learning and sense of community.

Some of these events are held to promote health within the student body, such as the recent free flu shot event. Other recurring events, such as arts and crafts in the library, allow students to meet new people while participating in an activity. Some events can help inform you, such as various career advice functions and Campus Conversations. Others can teach you new skills, such as the Green Bandana Project training. The point is there are a lot of events on campus—and they are free.

Showing up matters. When students attend events, it signals to the college what types of activities are most engaging. If only a small number of students show up for an event, it might mean that changes should be made to make it more appealing.

Many students have busy lives between their many courses, work or family matters. If you aren’t able to attend an event that seemed interesting, reaching out to the staff about it could make the next event more accessible.

There’s been mentions within various news outlets about loneliness being on rise. A way to combat this is by being active within your community. Simply interacting with others and seeing new places can do a lot to benefit your mental health.

You might discover new interests or people that you never would have met had you not showed up.

Your opinions and ideas let the school know what they can do to help make your time here memorable and fulfilling. If you have an idea for an event Kirkwood could host, let them know. Worst case scenario? You’re told that it isn’t possible. But even some simple suggestions, no matter how outlandish, lets your voice be heard.

Upcoming events can be found on the MyHub event calendar, including sporting events, which are free with your EagleCard. Attending games is a great way to show school spirit and support fellow students.

Next time you’re looking for something to do, check out what’s happening on campus because the more you get involved, the more rewarding your college experience will be.
