Finding familiarity in rooming with friends

When starting my journey at Kirkwood Community College, it was always likely that I would have to move to Cedar Rapids, and with that came the question as to how I should best approach my living arrangements.

Many questions came to my mind, like if it would be best to live alone, with people I’ve never met before or with friends. Pretty soon after having a vague plan in my mind, two friends from high school shared a similar interest in moving in with me to attend Kirkwood.

After graduation, we were all on the same page and the move in was swift and easy. I’ve been living with friends for the past couple of years, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

My biggest takeaway so far is the whole aspect of familiarity. The people I’ve decided to live with have been some of my closest friends for years. While there was some hesitancy in the air on whether seeing each other constantly would dampen the relationships overtime, it only strengthened it.

There was no stress about trying to familiarize myself with new people, and there wasn’t any uneasiness that comes with living with people I’ve never met before. Everything about the process felt way more safe and natural.

Another point for why this was so beneficial was the fact we were all going through a new phase of life together, moving into a new place and starting college for the first time. I can only imagine how intimidating it would be to through this alone. It also gave me and my roommates more of a sense of courage to make more friends and talk to others outside our own group.

Choosing to live with people whom I’m close with really made starting college a better experience overall, and I honestly think it’s the way to go if you’re interested in moving to another place. It has continued to offer so many great memories while also staying true to the roots of becoming a young adult.
