Outstanding Students

Alex Niermann

Where are you from? I’ve spent my whole life in North Liberty, Iowa.

Why did you choose Kirkwood? I wanted to attend a 2-year institution and I heard that Kirkwood was the most highly regarded community college in the state.

What is your major and how did you choose it? Communication. I’ve always had an interest in media and journalism and a possible career in those fields.

What has been your proudest moment at Kirkwood? Proudest moment was when I won the 2023 Kirkwood honors project competition with a documentary that I had spent about a year working on.

What are your plans after Kirkwood? After graduation, I’m going to the University of Iowa to continue pursuing my communication major.

What inspires or motivate you? No one thing in particular. For every project that I undertake, I have to find the specific motivation to complete that particular project, which I’m usually able to do.

Tell us who you are outside of Kirkwood. The majority of my free time is dedicated to listening to music. I fence as a competitive sport and bowl as a leisurely one.

What does being named an Outstanding Student mean to you? It’s quite the honor. I am very grateful to be given the title.
Is there anything else you’d like to add? I’d just like to thank the friends, family members, and professors who helped get me to this point.
