Outstanding Students

Nick Sundblad

Where are you from? Spencer, Iowa.

Why did you choose Kirkwood? The campus is in a convenient location and the staff were an amazing help when it came to applying, registering for classes, and were even willing to modify my start date as I was returning from active duty in the Marine Corps.

What is your major and how did you choose it? I am currently in my final semester of the Fire Science Technology program. It has always been a dream of mine to follow in my father’s footsteps and become a firefighter.

What has been your proudest moment at Kirkwood? Receiving the Outstanding Student Award. This is a great honor and I am fortunate to have had a great group of peers and teachers throughout my time here.

What are your plans after Kirkwood? I plan to stay in the area for the time being and continue to serve the community of North Liberty and surrounding townships. In the near future, I’d love to work as a full-time firefighter.

What inspires or motivates you? My peers in the classroom and my family at the firehouse. I strive to improve every day for them and the community members that may rely on me on their worst day. None of this would be possible without the help and support of my girlfriend, as she is my rock and biggest motivation.

Tell us about who you are outside of Kirkwood. I like to play video games, ride my motorcycle, and be around people that I care about. Surrounding myself with people who are like-minded and have a positive attitude.

What does being named an Outstanding Student mean to you? This is an incredible honor and I am so grateful for all of the support and guidance that has brought me here. My transition to becoming a student again after my time in the military wasn’t easy, and I’m thankful and humbled that my efforts are being recognized.
