Kirkwood Community College has a long history of athletic success, having won 16 national championships across all sports in school history. Here’s a look at all six sports offered at Kirkwood.
Baseball: After finishing the 2024-2025 season with a 21-12 conference record, the Kirkwood baseball team looks to expand on its prior success.
Helmed by head coach Todd Rima, he has guided the Eagles to two NJCAA World Series qualifiers and one fifth-place finish. With over 450 career wins at Kirkwood, Rima has helped lead many Eagles to playing at the next level.
After every season there are multiple baseball players who commit to Division I schools and four-year colleges. On the 2025 baseball team, 17 different players committed to four-year schools. In 2026 expect the same as Kirkwood has a long-lasting legacy of guiding players to the next step of baseball.
Softball: Coming off a 50-win season in 2025, and a 21-7 conference record, the Eagles softball team has seen plenty of recent success. Two years ago, Kirkwood saw a national runner-up finish which was the furthest finish in program history.
Coached by Eric Frese, he has helped lead the Eagles to more than 150 conference wins while also guiding the way for many players to continue their careers at the DI, DII and NAIA levels of collegiate softball.
The Eagles are looking to make it back to the NJCAA Nationals again in 2026.
Men’s Basketball: The Kirkwood men’s basketball team has the most recent national championship in school history, winning just last season. After finishing the 2024-2025 season with a dominant 15-3 conference record, the Eagles made it to the NJCAA DII National Championship and never lost again. The Eagles ended the season with an overall record of 33-3.
Head coach Tim Sandquist has a wealth of coaching experience, and in the 2024-2025 season he will return for his seventh season after winning North Central District Coach of the Year.
The Eagles will see four returning players from their national championship run a season ago and will look to tally another in the 2025-2026 season.
Women’s Basketball: Led by legendary head coach Kim Muhl, the women’s basketball team is one of highest accoladed sports teams in the nation. Having won an astounding 1,000-plus games as the Eagles head coach, Muhl most recently saw a fourth-place national championship finish in the 2024-2025 season.
However, that was only one of his 23 national championship appearances. He has taken home nine national championships in his 37-year coaching career. The women’s basketball team is on track to expand Muhl’s immense success.
Volleyball: The Eagles volleyball team is amidst its 2025-2026 season, where it is currently undefeated with a 12-0 record.
Since the 2022-2023 season, the Eagles have a conference record of 33-2 consistently being at the top of the ICCAC. Entering his third season as head coach, Dave Brown has led the Eagles to back-to-back national championship appearances and is looking to repeat that feat again in the 2025-2026 season.
Men’s Golf: Entering his 30th season as head coach, Darin Pint has led the Eagles to over 1,400 wins. Having sent over 100 golfers to the national championship, Pint was inducted to the NJCAA Coaches Hall of Fame in 2019.
He coached T.J. Redding in his 2006 national championship, while also coaching Carson Whittington to the national runner-up finish in 2016. Pint is leaving a legacy on the men’s golf team, and the fact he has defeated over 80% of teams he’s faced proves diligence of his work.
