Eagles Weekly

Eagles Weekly (Feb. 9 – Feb. 16)

This week was an interesting one for the Eagles. The softball team played just two games, going 1-1. Even though both the basketball teams saw game action only in Johnson Hall, the teams went a combined 3-1 while maintaining their excellence.

Men’s Basketball:

Feb. 11

Iowa Central 68 at Kirkwood 77

The Eagles started their week off against the ranked Tritons (20-5) for a tough conference matchup. Iowa Central controlled the entire first half. At one point, they were up by 11 points, which helped lead to a 39-31 first half performance against Kirkwood. However, sophomore forward Manasse Kasongo led the Eagles with 15 second half points, which led them to securing a comeback 77-68 win. Kasongo finished the night with 20 points and was joined by sophomore guard Chris Coleman who had 23 points himself; they were the only two Eagles who ended the night in double digit points. The Iowa Central Tritons record falls to 20-6.

Feb. 14

Northeast 85 at Kirkwood 67

After a triumphant win earlier in the week, the Eagles were set up against the Hawks (11-11) for a conference matchup. Northeast started the game off hot and never took its foot off the break, having four separate players compile double digit performances. Kirkwood struggled from the three-point line while also being considerably out-rebounded by Northeast — a recipe for failure. The Eagles lost 85-67. Kasongo led the Eagles with 14 points, while sophomore guard Ben Bockman (11) and freshman forward Cole Marsh (10) both ended in double digit points. The Northeast Hawks record improves to 12-11.

After splitting the two games, the Eagles record now sits at 20-7. This week, they will face off against Ellsworth Community College (Feb. 18) and Des Moines Area Community College (Feb. 21). These will be the final two games of the regular season for the Eagles.

Women’s Basketball:

Feb. 11

Iowa Central 45 at Kirkwood 81

The Eagles open their week against the Tritons (19-6) for a conference matchup. When Kirkwood starts the game off hot, it is difficult to slow them down, and this game is a testament to that statement. As a team, they scored 22 points in the first quarter and 24 points in the second quarter. Iowa Central’s response in the second half? 19 total points. At the helm of scoring was freshman forward Erianna Moeschter, who delivered 22 points on an efficient 10-for-14 shooting night. Joined by Moeschter with double-digit points was Whitney Sullivan (11) and Dasia Foster (10). The Eagles won 81-45. The Iowa Central Tritons record falls to 19-7.

Feb. 14

Northeast 39 at Kirkwood 70

After a blowout win previous in the week, the Eagles faced off against the Hawks (16-8) for a conference matchup. The Eagles yet again started off hot and never looked back. Olivia Wren, Madison Stowater and Moeschter all finished the game with 12 points apiece. The Eagles notably held the Hawks to zero made field goals (0-12) in the fourth quarter. After the blowout loss, the Northeast Eagles record decreased to 16-9.

After two blowout wins, the Eagles improved their dominant run and are now 23-3 on the season. This week the Eagles will face off against Ellsworth Community College (Feb., 18) and Des Moines Area Community College (Feb. 21).

Softball:

Feb. 9

Kirkwood 2 at Jones College 7

Kirkwood 4 at Jones College 2

As the Eagles season goes underway, they still are facing some learning curbs. After losing game one of the double-header 2-7, Kirkwood managed to come back in game two and win 4-2. Across these two games Breckin De La Rosa managed three hits while including one homerun. This week, the Eagles will have three double-headers. The first being Feb. 20 against Hinds Community College, the second being Feb. 21 against Meridian Community College and the third being Feb. 22 against Holmes Community College.

Eagles of the Week:

Manasse Kasongo: 17 PPG, 3.5 APG, 7 RPG, 14-20 FG, 1-2 3PT

Sophomore forward Manasse Kasongo is continuing his impressive second year campaign. With extremely impressive efficiency from the floor, the Eagles find themselves on Kasongo as a bucket-getter time and time again. His impact on the glass should not go unnoticed either. Seven boards a game helps Kirkwood with both second chance points, keeping the ball out of the hands of the other team. This is Kasongo’s second Eagle of the Week honors.

Erianna Moeschter: 17 PPG, 3.5 APG, 6.5 RPG, 3.5 SPG, 14-22 FG, 0-0 3PT

Freshman forward Erianna Moeschter had herself a strong week. The freshman notched an impressive 22 points against a tough Iowa Central team. Though most impressively, she did not take a single shot from three-point rage and saw minimal free throw attempts. She fought hard for every bucket and is very deserving of her first and this week’s Eagle of the Week honors.
