When students talk about Kirkwood Community College sports, the conversation often centers on the recent national champion men’s basketball team or the top-five volleyball team.
What is often overlooked is the slate of intramural activities offered at the Rec Center.
Intramural sports allow students to compete against one another in a variety of activities. Unlike the Eagles teams, intramurals are open to all students and involve competition only among Kirkwood participants, not other colleges.
“Intramurals are a great way to have fun and destress from school and work,” said Recreation Services supervisor Brett Baumgart.
The Rec Center offers a wide range of options, from flag football and basketball leagues to single-day events such as free-throw contests and pickleball.
Intramural programs give students the chance to participate in sports they might not otherwise have the opportunity to try. To join, students simply download the free Kirkwood Rec app and create an account.
Baumgart said students can expect a fun, competitive environment and plenty of chances to meet new people. “It’s a great way to meet people that are like-minded,” he said.
First-year student Nile Fall agreed. “I like meeting new people and getting to hang out with people you already know,” he said.
Baumgart encouraged hesitant students to give intramurals a try, especially the one-day events, which he said are low-pressure opportunities to have fun, and possibly win a championship t-shirt.
This year, outdoor pickleball was added to the lineup.
“Every year I’ve tried to add at least one, maybe take one off or tweak one a little bit depending on how numbers have been,” Baumgart said.
Students can view the full list of intramural offerings on the Kirkwood Rec app. Such as flag football, dodgeball, kickball, ping pong and many others.
Baumgart said there is something for everyone, from competitive leagues to more relaxed activities.
