Men’s basketball season comes to an end

The men’s basketball team season came to an end on Thursday, April 8. The Eagles fell to the Lakers of Iowa Lakes 79-56. Kirkwood finished the season at 14-10. The reigning NJCAA champions were not selected for the tournament and will hope for a better season next year. The Eagles had a tough end to the post COVID season. However, next year could be a lot better for the Eagles. Leading player Corvon Seals will leave but 11 players will return for the next season.

Iowa Lakes had control for most of the game. The Lakers led 46-24 at the end of the first half. The Eagles reduced the difference in score in the second half but it wasn’t good enough. Iowa Lakes would go on to beat Southwestern 85-73 in the ICCAC Division 11 tournament. The 2021 ICCAC Division 11 champions will take on North Central Missouri in the NCJAA tournament.

Iowa Lakes’ Ryan Hall led the game in scoring with 26 points. He also had 2 rebounds, 2 blocks, 1 assist, and 1 steal. Xzavier Jones had a great game as he dropped 17 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals, and 2 dimes. Caleb Johnson grabbed 11 points, 10 boards, and 2 steals.

To no one’s surprise, Corvon Seals led the way for the Eagles. Seals had 14 points, 3 rebounds, 1 dime and 1 steal. Both Blake Brinkmeyer and Blessin Kimble came off the bench and scored 9 points. Brinkmeyer finished with 6 rebounds and 1 assist. Kimble had 5 boards, 1 dime, and 1 block.

Iowa Lakes shot 75 percent from the free throw line, had a 49 percent field goal percentage, and a 38 percent from beyond the arc. The Lakers finished the game with 15 turnovers. However, the Eagles shot a disappointing 52 percent from the free throw line. Kirkwood’s field goal percentage was 36 percent and an underwhelming 25 percent from beyond the arc.
