Trump stands down on Greenland invasion

Escalations of events involving U.S. President Donald J. Trump’s willingness to go against our NATO allies, require him to makes reckless decisions. Just like everyone else, we here at Kirkwood Community College are paying the price.

The president has been unrelenting in the fact that he will stop at nothing, until he successfully invades Greenland. “I may put a tariff on countries if they don’t go along with Greenland, because we need Greenland for national security,” the president stated during a roundtable held at the White House on Jan. 16. President Trump has implemented punitive tariffs on eight countries in the NATO alliance such as: Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland.

Many government officials, even including the republican members in the House of Representatives, voice disapproval. Rep. Melanie Stansbury, in her speech for the impeachment of Trump on Jan. 15, stated, “You know you’ve lost in 2026 when republicans in the United States House of Representatives are openly talking about impeaching the President of the United States if he invades Greenland.”

This further signals that Trump’s plans to invade Greenland are not supported nor ideal for any average citizen in the U.S. As funding for classes is cut, we are now forced to pay more for our careers and necessities.

As of Jan. 21, 2026, Trump stated, “We probably won’t get anything unless I decide to use excessive strength and force—where we would be frankly unstoppable, but I won’t do that.” The president also mentioned that he has reached a framework of a deal with NATO, with respect to Greenland in the future. Also, he announced plans to back down on tariffs originally planned for February. This is good news, generally, but prices are still rising and imports aren’t getting cheaper.

Simple things we have taken for granted, are now becoming luxuries such as basic middle-class assets. For a college student, Trump’s second term is a financial nightmare come true.
