COVID-19 has put much of the world on pause and affected many aspects of life as a college student, including opportunities to travel abroad.
Traveling abroad through college programs provides students with the opportunity to experience another culture firsthand and at a reduced cost. It’s also a way to build one’s resume and develop soft skills. Such skills include flexibility, a stronger sense of confidence and a better ability to manage change.
Kirkwood Community College Study Abroad Advisor Ken Nesbett said he is cautiously optimistic regarding the study abroad opportunities for this academic year. The college hopes to send out a wide array of students, at least 12 – 15 students on each trip, through the programs.
More than 15 programs are set up for the year in 14 countries, with each program covering a different subject. Nesbett said he encourages students who want to find information on specific programs to visit the Global Learn- ing office or do research through the college’s website where they can also contact the faculty leader for the trip.
Nesbett added that Global Learning has also created pre-departure orientation and advising to help prepare students for studying in another country. Both programs cover cultural awareness, health and safety while traveling, academic information and tips and tricks for travel.
Kirkwood hosts the Global Advantage scholarship, which gives $1,000 for a short term faculty led trip. The scholarship is available to part-time or fulltime students seeking a degree while having a 2.5 GPA.
