Looking to see your art featured in Kirkwood Community College’s collection? How about winning $300 while you do it? Well, here’s your chance – Kirkwood is hosting an art competition and all students are invited to participate.
Five to six winning submissions will be chosen for a mural on the second floor of Iowa Hall in the atrium near the Multicultural Lounge. Pieces must be submitted digitally and will be printed in a large format. Any two dimensional medium is welcome, including photography, drawing, painting, printmaking, collage and digital art.
Artwork submissions are due by Dec. 3, 2024. Then, a second round of submissions will be accepted in the spring semester, with a deadline of May 2, 2025.
The competition aims to showcase the incredible work done by Kirkwood’s talented students while exemplifying just what it means to be an Eagle. This mural is being created to contribute both to the aesthetic of the building, and to pay homage to Kirkwood’s history and its future.
According to Professor and Visual Communication and Design Program Coordinator David Brandstetter, Kirkwood is looking for art that captures its rich history, the history of Iowa Hall and education at Kirkwood, while connecting to changes in culture and student life. “I’m looking forward to seeing what the students see related to the topic, visual storytelling, and the illustrative style they use,” said Brandstetter.
Students will select their favorites among the submissions via a survey sent out by the Student Life office. Final selections for the first round of submissions are expected to take place in April.
While there is no limit on how many submissions a student may make, Brandstetter recommended that artists focus on quality over quantity. “I’d rather see students focus on one really good design first and if time and talent permit, create more,” he said.
Brandstetter went on to remind student artists to have fun and said, “This piece, if selected, will be on display in a very prominent public space here at Kirkwood. How cool is that?”
All submissions should be sent to david.brandstetter@kirkwood.edu.
