Kirkwood Community College’s Student Life is hosting two movie nights this semester with a competition between students in Leadership Council and their advisors.
Each side is assigned to bring as many students as they can, so all Kirkwood students can get involved by attending one of the upcoming movie nights.
Seth VanderTuig, director of Student Life, said, “We try in Student Life to have as many opportunities for students as possible, but every student likes something different. With movies it is always exciting to have popcorn and pop in a theater, in a movie on a big screen.”
The leadership council will sponsor “Anyone But You” on Feb. 11 at 4 p.m. and try to get a higher attendance than the advisors do on March 12 for a showing of “Moana 2” at 5 p.m. Both movie locations will be 2082 Cedar Hall. In a previous competition the leadership council brought in 30 students, but lost. The advisors had almost 60.
But there’s a twist. If student council members come watch the advisor’s assigned movie, then the advisor’s count is reduced by that many.
But that’s the equivalent of student council members being counted twice, so how do the advisors intend to win?
“That’s a good question,” said VanderTuig. “I think because us as advisors have worked here for a while so we have confidence that we can win the competition. But as advisors our goal is to help our students in reaching their goals.”
