Local summer events

What: SEEDs club, sustainable garden club at Kirkwood Community College

When: SEEDs contributes produce harvested over the summer to campus and community food pantries. Any student is welcome to participate by donating time to help weed, water, harvest produce and maintain the gardens throughout the summer. E-mail nic.jones@kirkwood.edu for more information. 


What: KCCK will present Jazz Under The Stars, a series of four free concerts. In addition to the four headlining groups, two of the concerts will also open with student ensembles.

Where: Noelridge Park, Cedar Rapids

When:

  • Aug. 4: The Dandelion Stompers, student ensemble – Vivian Shanley and Friends
  • Aug. 11: Betsy Hickok/Ron Roberts Quintet
  • Aug. 18: The Iowa Women’s Jazz Orchestra, student ensemble – The 5K Quartet
  • Aug. 25: The Blake Shaw Big(ish) Band. Blake is a Kirkwood alum.

All concerts will begin at 6:30 p.m.

What: Marion Arts Festival is consistently named among the top tier of juried art events nationwide. Presenting 50 artists and offering fine art and fine craft to an audience of 10,000.

What: Monarch Fest 

Where: Indian Creek Nature Center, 5300 Otis Rd SE, Cedar Rapids

What: Glass and ceramic class

Where: Iowa Ceramics Center, 329 10th Ave SE, Suite 117, Cedar Rapids 

When: Various classes are offered throughout the summer, some classes require no skills or prior experience.


What: Cedar Rapids Freedom Festival

Where: Events are held throughout the city. $5 button may be purchased for free or reduced cost for attendance of all events. Visit Freedomfestival.com for a complete list of events.

When:  Events start June 14 and run through July 4.  


What: Balloon Glow, watch hot air balloons go up after dusk to enjoy their glow.
