The Sundberg Library at Kirkwood Community College has added a seed library, a collection of seeds students can use to start their own home garden.
To access the new seed library, students can go to the front desk in the library and ask to browse the seed collection. The seeds are stored in a binder behind the desk, and librarians will help interested students find a selection that’s right for them.
“It’s a collection of seeds from plants that people have grown in the area,” said librarian Kate Cameron. “Then they donate the seeds so that other people can then use them and grow those vegetables, those flowers, those herbs, and then collect seeds for themselves.”
“It’s certainly not a requirement to bring back seeds, but people can. The idea is that you can keep sharing seeds.”
Cameron estimates there are between 30 and 40 different types of seeds in the library’s collection. Students can find a variety of seeds for vegetables, flowers, herbs and fruits in the library.
“It’s a new project here. This is the first growing season that we’ve had them so we’re just kind of trying it out and seeing how it goes,” said Cameron. “We’ll see if people like them, if they bring the seeds back, and we’ll just see what happens each year.”
The library is currently accepting seed donations from students, faculty and staff. Those interested can stop by the library with questions or visit kirkwood.edu/library.
