The Dance Marathon club is going all out to recruit new members. A glance at their title can be deceiving. While the club does host a dance, its primary focus is a virtuous dedication to helping children at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital.
“We’re trying to crack down on recruiting as many students across the campus as much as possible and to inspire them to make a difference,” said Dance Marathon Recruitment Director Carson Brincks.
He continued, “Our goal for this push week is to get as many students across campus to be willing to show up to our big event on March first. We’re hoping to get at least a 150 students involved, if not more, to come out for a night of games, food, prizes and just an all-around good story.”
Brincks went on to say, “Any student who signs up to be part of Dance Marathon is signed up to win prizes throughout the week, and they’re also invited to come to our participant night … we’ll have games and learn more of what it means to be part of Dance Marathon.” Students can find more information on the KCCDanceMarathonFTK Facebook page.
Brincks said students can also stop by some of the club’s many tabling events around the campus, some of which will have free throw games, hot chocolate and other fun activities.
“Dance Marathon is a group, excited and ready to get other students around the campus who are also excited for the cause of saving children, that’s why we exist,” said Rylee May, Kirkwood Dance Marathon co-advisor.
She added, “Many of our student leaders have been part of Dance Marathon since they were in high school. Many of us know someone who has been affected and impacted by Dance Marathon, when receiving funds for their treatment.”
“Meetings go fast because there is a lot to tackle, and our group has a lot of ideas to fundraise for the hospital,” said May.
Kirkwood Dance Marathon recently held a basketball shooting competition event at the Rec Center with more than 50 students attending.
“Kids … whether at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s hospital or another, is no fun […] They sometimes can’t communicate what they need, how they’re feeling,” said May.
As a result, every once in a while, Kirkwood Dance Marathon members will visit the children they’ve been supporting.
“I know for me, I got involved in Dance Marathon during my college years, it transpired to me co-advising Dance Marathon at Kirkwood. But I guess for others, know that they are making a difference in the lives of children and their families who are going through very stressful times,” Rylee added.
She went on to say, “Our money directly goes to the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s hospital to support all areas of the hospital, so we make a larger impact … so I hope our Kirkwood community is inspired and willing to help us make a difference by signing up to participate, fundraise and come to the big event on Friday March 1.”
