In her two years at Kirkwood Community College, sophomore guard Jenna Twedt, science, averaged 15.1 points per game on 38.7% shooting from three, won 68 games and helped deliver a national championship as a freshman. In the fall, she will be taking her talents to Cedar Falls to play for the University of Northern Iowa.
“Kirkwood has probably been the best decision I’ve made for my basketball career,” said Twedt. “Head Coach (Kim) Muhl’s a great guy, he has been very honest and up front with me from the very beginning and the community here is great. The college is perfect.
“The coaches and everybody I’ve played with have been amazing. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”
Twedt continued by praising Coach Muhl and the impact he has had on her game. She recognized him for helping the team focus on the basics of basketball, a change from her experience playing AAU.
She credits this focus on helping her grow in confidence as a player, something she says other coaches have not done for her. “I am very grateful for him in my journey here,” she said.
She will be joining a Panthers basketball program coached by Tanya Warren, who just completed her 17th season as head coach.
“She’s definitely very heavy on building a team chemistry, which is a very good thing for any program,” Twedt said. “Chemistry is a huge thing when it comes to basketball, and she talked about it a lot and preached it a lot and how it is to pick each other up when basketball doesn’t go your way. That was something that was really big for me because that’s something that we have here at Kirkwood. I liked that a lot from her.”
The Panthers play in a competitive Missouri Valley Conference, including Murray State, a team that faced Iowa in the first round of March Madness this past season.
“I am very excited for it,” Twedt added. “Definitely a little nervous, but I think it’s a good nervous. It’s definitely gonna be a tough conference. It’s gonna be a big step up from her. I love the challenge. I’m very excited for it.”
