Honors projects align with student interests, academic goals
The Kirkwood Community College Honors Program is still accepting applicants for the fall. The program is designed for students seeking to explore their academic interests in greater depth.
This program offers students the ability to design and construct a project of their choosing, enabling students to pursue topics that align with their interests and academic goals.
Beyond academic recognition, the program offers many experiential benefits, including one-on-one mentorship from faculty members, project management skills, and more. Dr. Peter Jauhiainen, chair of the Honors Program, highlighted the value of this personalized learning experience. “The one-on-one exchange with someone who knows the subject area is just inherently a wonderful aspect of the program,” he explained. “Being able to work that closely with a professor before your junior year is pretty remarkable.”
This opportunity is funded by the Kirkwood Foundation, offering free honors credits to participants. Upon completion of these projects, students will have the opportunity to showcase their work before semester’s end. Students can apply for the Terry Moran Honors Scholarship and compete in the honors project competition, where top contestants can win cash prizes.
Incoming freshmen with a high school GPA of 3.6 or higher and current Kirkwood students with a 3.4 GPA or above are eligible to apply.
The deadline for the fall semester is Sept. 27, and the only requirement to get started is a discussion with a faculty member to outline a project idea. Whether participating this semester or planning for future involvement, the program presents a valuable opportunity that could mark the next step in a student’s academic journey.
