Trunk or Treat

A chance for Kirkwood’s adult learners to bring their kids and enjoy some trunk-or-treating on campus! Costumes are encouraged, but not required. The event will take place at the top-tier of Iowa Hall parking lot from 3 – 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 23.

Lunch and some tunes

Enjoy some country music from musician Stephen Paul on Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 11:15 a.m. in Iowa Hall. Stephen Paul is a singer-songwriter from the Louisiana Bayou – West Monroe, LA. Stephen Paul’s music is inspired by his Cajun roots and classic country. 

Tie-diversity

Join in the fun at the center of the campus (weather permitting) to tie-dye a shirt (free shirt provided while they last) on Friday Oct. 21 at 10:30 a.m. in celebration of National Coming Out week.

Veterans dinner

Students, faculty, and alumni have the opportunity to attend a Veteran’s Dinner in honor of the Veteran alumni of Kirkwood community college and see the new Veteran’s lounge in Iowa Hall. The dinner will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 9 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Iowa Hall. Kirkwood President Dr. Lori Sundberg and OIF Combat Veteran Kevin Simpson will deliver remarks. The dinner is free to veterans and costs $15 for non-veteran guests. RSVP for the event at https://www.kirkwood.edu/alumni/veterandinner.

Dia de los Muertos celebration

The second event of Hispanic Heritage Celebration Week is Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). Día de los Muertos is celebrated every year on Nov. 1 and 2. 

The two-day celebration reunites the living with the dead, as it is believed this is when the passageway between the world of the living and the spirit world opens. Come learn more about Día de los Muertos and enjoy a traditional treat!  Join the fun on the second floor of Iowa Hall from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 1. 

Meet the therapy dogs

Come meet Kirkwood’s therapy dogs, Dex and Wick! They will be ready to meet students on Thursday, Oct. 20 from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and again on Thursday, Oct. 27 from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m on the second floor of the Cedar Hall Atrium.

Global Learning accepting donated winter clothes

Have a winter coat that no longer fits or hoping to donate gently used gloves? Global learning is accepting gently used winter clothes for the upcoming winter season. They are looking for winter coats, gloves, hats, and boots.

Virtual bingo

Students have the opportunity to participate in virtual bingo with fellow community college students from across the state as $350 in prizes is given out to 20+ students. The only thing students need to participate is to be a student of a community college in Iowa.

Loteria

Continuing with Hispanic Heritage Celebration week, come play a round or two of Loteria. Loteria – the Spanish word for lottery is a traditional game of chance. Often referred to as “Mexican Bingo”, illustrated cards with images take the place of bingo numbers. 

There will be prizes for the winners! Take a chance at the Loteria on Wednesday, Nov. 2 starting at 11 a.m. and ending at 12:30 p.m. in the Linn Hall lobby.

Free bowling at May City Bowl

Head on over to May City Bowl for free bowling from 3-5 p.m. on Tuesday Nov. 1. Scan into the event using the event check-in QR code located in your MyHub App. May City Bowl is located at 1648 Trent St SW Cedar Rapid, IA 52404.

Fall food drive

Kirkwood Fall Food Drive runs from Oct. 19 to Nov. 4 and helps support Linn Community Food Bank and Kirkwood’s Food Pantry. Donations can be dropped off to the Information Desk on the second floor of Iowa Hall. It is also a competition between clubs and organizations. The winning club/organization will receive the Fall Community Service Drive traveling trophy.

Free go-kart racing

Students can head on down to Speedeez Go-Karts for free indoor go-karting on Monday Oct. 24 from 3-5 p.m. Scan into the event using the event check-in QR code located in their MyHub app. Speedeez Indoor Go-Karts is located at 1120 33rd Ave SW Unit D Cedar Rapids, IA 52404.

Free roller skating

Students can roller skate for free at Super Skate on Sunday, Oct. 30 from 1-4 p.m. To participate, scan into the event using the event check-in QR code that is found in the MyHub app. Super Skate is located at 5100 Northland Ave NE Cedar Rapids, IA 52402.

Free ice Skating at ImOn Ice

On Friday, Oct. 21 students can ice skate for free at ImOn Ice Arena. Students free skate will be from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Check into the event at ImOn using the event check-in QR code that can be found in the MyHub app. ImOn Ice Arena is located at 1100 Rockford Rd SW Cedar Rapids, IA 52404.

Kirkwood women’s basketball scrimmage

Come out to watch the Kirkwood women’s basketball take on Mount Mercy in the first scrimmage of the season. Cheer on our Eagles on Tuesday, Oct. 25 from 6-8 p.m. in Johnson Hall.

Kirkwood Dance Team performance

Come support the Kirkwood Dance Team at Unimpaired Dry Bar in Iowa City on Thursday Oct. 20 at 4 p.m. 10% of all sales from 4 p.m. to midnight at the event will be donated to the Kirkwood Dance Team to help them raise money for their season, including new uniforms and covering travels costs for competitions. Stop out from some handcrafted NA drinks and delicious food for Thirsty Thursday!
