Outstanding Students

Alondra Hernandez

Where are you from? I am from Malcom, Iowa, originally and I currently live in Marion.

Why did you choose Kirkwood? I heard great things about the Dental Hygiene program. I knew I wanted to have experience with real patients and Kirkwood was the place to do that for me.

What is your major and how did you choose it? Dental Hygiene. I love talking with people and getting to know them. I also love the feeling of taking someone from a state of being unhealthy to a state of health.

What has been your proudest moment at Kirkwood? My proudest moment at Kirkwood was receiving this award! I have never been recognized for my academic achievements before being at Kirkwood, so this was a very big honor for me.

What are your plans after Kirkwood? To begin at my full-time job at Dental Health Partners and begin my new chapter. I hope to get a house and a few dogs with my fiancé. We also have our wedding planned for 2025! In the future I would love to work directly with the Hispanic community in Iowa to help with their oral health.

What inspires or motivates you? My motivation in life would definitely be my family. My parents have been my biggest supporters since day one. They have helped me emotionally and financially and I could not have ever succeeded without them. I thank god every day that I have the best family I could ever ask for.

Tell us who you are outside of Kirkwood. I would consider myself a person that loves to have fun and get things done. On the weekends I will prepare for the week and try to work on new projects. I also love to spend time with my friends. I also love to paint and draw, and I hope to find more time for that when I graduate.

What does being named an Outstanding Student mean to you? I have loved my journey at Kirkwood and I am so glad that I have been successful and have been able to meet some of my favorite people at this school. I love everything about my experience at Kirkwood and am honored to be graduating from here with academic acknowledgment.

Is there anything else you would like to add? Thank you to everyone who helped me along the way, all of my instructors, my classmates for being so loving and supportive, my bosses at the learning commons Hailey Hebl, and Mike Scallon, my coworkers at the learning commons, my friends and family.
