Outstanding Students

Wilsee Kollie

Where are you from? Born in Liberia, Africa. I live in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Why did you choose Kirkwood? I chose Kirkwood Community College because of the lower cost benefits.

What is your major and how did you choose it? I am in the liberal arts program. At first, I was a communications major and then a psych major. Now, I am focused on both fields of study because they bring me joy.

What has been your proudest moment at Kirkwood? My proudest moment at Kirkwood was winning the Code-Meshing contest in the liberal arts program. Students even come up to me and tell me my poem is outstanding. At first, I was confused about how they knew, but then they told me their teacher had them analyze my poem. It was such an out-of-body experience that I am very appreciative of.

What are your plans after Kirkwood? I plan to transfer to the University of Iowa and study communications and psychology to get a bachelors.

What inspires or motivates you? The ability to make a change by inspiring dialogue and creativity inspires and motivates me.

Tell us about who you are outside of Kirkwood. I try to be a very kind person through anything I do. I love anything art-related, such as poetry, fashion, painting, drawing, crocheting, etc.

What does being named an Outstanding Student mean to you? It truly is a blessing to me. It means I am seen in my efforts, talents, and voice.

Is there anything else you’d like to add? Thank you for giving out this award, not only to me but to the many individuals who may not believe they are outstanding, but they are.
