Outstanding Students

Chloe Roethler

Where are you from?

Iowa City, Iowa.

Why did you choose Kirkwood?

Honestly, the main reason I chose Kirkwood is that it’s the closest community college to where I live. That worked out in my favor because I absolutely love being a student here.

What is your major and how did you choose it?

I am in the Digital Arts program. Photography has been my hobby for many years, and I decided to get some credentials and see if I can turn it into a career. I told my advisor that I wanted to learn photography, and that’s how I ended up in Digital Arts. Which, by the way, is an incredible program, and I highly recommend it to everyone.

What has been your proudest moment at Kirkwood?

I’ve had a lot of proud moments, so it’s hard to choose. I 3-D printed and then painted a human heart prop for a Video Production project, and it turned out really cool.

What are your plans after Kirkwood?

I would love to start a digital art business.

What inspires or motivates you?

I’m kind of a perfectionist when it comes to school (but weirdly, nowhere else in my life), so that helps me stay motivated.

Tell us about who you are outside of Kirkwood – hobbies, family, other interests, etc.

I have two corgis, two cats and a fiancée. My favorite hobby is photography, obviously. I also like to read, write and watch tutorials on all manner of weird things on YouTube.

What does being named an Outstanding Student mean to you?

As an older student returning to school, I was really scared that I wouldn’t be able to keep up. Being nominated for Outstanding Student is really rewarding for me because I have worked really hard.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

I would like to thank some of my professors that have encouraged and challenged me along the way: Christine Flavin, Randy Langel, and Greta Songe. Also my friend and fellow student JoEllen, who has helped me get through some stressful assignments.
