Outstanding Students

Ethan Krigbaum

Where are you from?

Marion, Iowa.

Why did you choose Kirkwood?

I chose Kirkwood because it offered the program and degree I was interested in, it was close to home and it was much cheaper than other schools.

What is your major and how did you choose it?

Construction Management. I chose it because it combines business and construction, two things I really enjoy. Also, it offered a way that I could move up in the construction industry faster than just putting time in, in the field.

What has been your proudest moment at Kirkwood?

My proudest moment was in February of 2022, when some other students, faculty and I traveled down to Orlando, Florida, for the NAHB Student Competition and the International Builders Show. Five other students and myself had been working hard on a project modeled after a real world situation in the construction industry for about a couple months. We presented our proposal in front of a panel of industry judges and an audience, and won 1St place for our division. I served as the project manager on the project and was very proud at how my team worked together to achieve this goal of ours.

What are your plans after Kirkwood?

I will continue working for my current company, PEAK Construction Group out of North Liberty, in the same position I currently hold, working foreman.

What inspires or motivates you?

I am motivated by living up to the standards set by people that I have a deep respect for, not letting anyone down and being/doing the best that I can.

Tell us about who you are outside of Kirkwood – hobbies, family, other interests, etc.

I enjoy spending time with friends in the outdoors, watching and playing sports and learning more about the industry I am in, which is construction.

What does being named an Outstanding Student mean to you?

Being named and Outstanding Student means that all the hard work and time that I have invested into my education is being recognized and it was worth it, not just for the award but also the added knowledge from the extra time spent learning.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

Thank you to my professors, my peers and my examples and elders in the workforce who have helped me achieve a valuable education and this award.
