Outstanding Students

Jimmy Nguyen

Where are you from?

I am from Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Why did you choose Kirkwood?

I originally chose Kirkwood because of the cheaper tuition. I chose to stay at Kirkwood because of the friendly and helpful faculty.  I believe I would not be as successful without them. I couldn’t express enough how much I appreciate the faculty here.

What is your major and how did you choose it?

I wanted to major in something that felt fulfilling to me. I decided that pharmacology was the path to fulfill that need. Along with my strong academic interest in Chemistry I chose to major in Pharmaceutical Chemistry.

What has been your proudest moment at Kirkwood?

My proudest moment was being accepted into a research program. I never knew that there were such programs available. Beyond my coursework the programs have helped me gain confidence in my academic ability.

What are your plans after Kirkwood?

After Kirkwood I plan on attending the College of Pharmacy at University of Iowa.

What inspires or motivates you?

When I need motivation and inspiration, I think about my family. Being the child of immigrant parents furthers my desire to build an even stronger foundation than the one my parents have built for me.

Tell us about who you are outside of Kirkwood – hobbies, family, other interests, etc.

I have been working in the restaurant industry the past 11 years. I love to attend music festivals, travelling to state parks and big cities, on rare occasion I play video games.

An Outstanding Student to me is one who can persevere through difficult times. Even if a desired grade isn’t achieved, the act of putting forth that effort and energy into something is outstanding.
