Where are you from?
Tipton, Iowa.
Why did you choose Kirkwood?
I decided to attend Kirkwood because I had heard how great Kirkwood’s Interior Design program was.
What is your major and how did you choose it?
Interior Design. Prior to returning to school I worked in mental health. During that time I began to recognize the deep impact that the spaces we live and work in have on us. When I decided I was ready to make a change and go back to school, I realized that interior design would provide me with a career where I could utilize my passion for creativity and problem solving combined with my desire to work with people.
What are your plans after Kirkwood?
I will be staying on with the design firm where I completed my internship here in Cedar Rapids.
What inspires or motivates you?
I love trying to create something that is practical, but unique, so finding where aesthetic meets function is a driver for me.
Tell us about who you are outside of Kirkwood – hobbies, family, other interests, etc.
In my free time I enjoy spending time with my family, playing volleyball and hiking. I love all things related to art and architecture, so I love reading about them as well as seeing exhibits and even just driving around to explore local architecture. My most out of control hobby is house plants, I have an absurd number of plants.
What does being named an Outstanding Student mean to you?
We don’t always see ourselves as others see us. I try to be there for my classmates and provide them with feedback, support and perspective if they ever need. I don’t always feel like the strongest student, but this was a reminder that my role isn’t to be or feel perfect, but that what I have to offer is valuable. Being named Outstanding Student provided me with the external perspective on the impact I have.
