Lydia Hamilton

Where are you from?

I am from Oelwein, Iowa.

Why did you choose Kirkwood?

When I arrived on my visit, the staff was friendly and personable. We have a highly respected, rigorous nursing program. Also, I love the environment and opportunities that Kirkwood provides.

What is your major and how did you choose it?

I’m in the nursing program. I decided to be a nurse because I am a people-person and enjoy caring for others. There are so many career opportunities in this field. Nursing has always been an interest of mine.

What has been your proudest moment at Kirkwood?

My proudest moment was when I received the ACT Endowed Scholarship, which is full tuition.

What are your plans after Kirkwood?

My plans after Kirkwood are to become a pediatric nurse. I would love to work at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital to begin my career. Eventually, I am interested in becoming a hospice nurse, school nurse, or nurse educator.

What inspires or motivates you?

I am motivated by the connections I make with my patients and the impact that can be made during a vulnerable time in their life.

Tell us about who you are outside of Kirkwood – hobbies, family, other interests, etc.

I enjoy singing, spending time with family and friends, shopping, traveling and doing DIY projects in my spare time.

What does being named an Outstanding Student mean to you?

Being named an Outstanding Student means that my hard work in the nursing program has been paying off and I am moving closer to my goal of becoming a nurse.
