Outstanding Students

Marisa Henze

Q: Where are you from? (city, state)

A: I am from Oxford, Iowa

Q: Why did you choose Kirkwood?

A: I chose Kirkwood because I had friends who attended and had told me how well prepared they felt to enter the work force after graduation.

Q: What is your major and how did you choose it?

A: I am currently a nursing major. I wanted to be a nurse after working with some amazing mental health nurses that inspired me to want to help others in a similar way.

Q: What has been your proudest moment at Kirkwood?

A: My proudest moment at Kirkwood has been starting my very first IV during my clinical rotation.

Q: What are your plans after Kirkwood?

A: After Kirkwood I plan to continue on and get my BSN and eventually my Masters. I would like to work on a medical psych unit and teach nursing students one day.

Q: What inspires or motivates you?

A: My family and friends inspire and motivate me. They have all reached amazing goals in the face of many obstacles and I hope I can prove that I can do the same.

Q: Tell us about who you are outside of Kirkwood – hobbies, family, other interests, etc.

A: Outside of Kirkwood I love to garden and cook. My fiancé and I just purchased an old farmhouse with land and are in the process of flipping the house and raising some chickens.

Q: What does be named an Outstanding Student mean to you?

A: I feel very honored to have received the Outstanding Student Award. I have never traditionally thought of myself as a strong student. I have worked hard while at Kirkwood and it has paid off.

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to add?

A: There are so many helpful people at Kirkwood that have guided me to get to where I am now. The resources are available for those that need it, and I am very grateful for all the help.
