With March right around the corner, Kirkwood Community College students will find the days growing longer and warmer, but the hottest place to be on campus will still be Johnson Hall.
Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams could potentially play all of their ICCAC playoff tournament games at home.
Playing on their home court gives the Eagles the advantage of favorable fans and familiar routines while avoiding the stress of travel.
The number of home games in the playoffs is determined by tournament seeding, which ranks the teams from one through eight based on conference standings.
The higher-seeded teams in any match-up play at home. In addition, seeding gives the highest seeded team the maximum advantage. For example, the No. 1 seeded team would play the No. 8 seeded team in the first round of the playoffs, the No. 2 team plays the No. 7 team, and so on.
The undefeated Kirkwood women’s basketball team has a four-game lead over Ellsworth Community College with just three games remaining. That gives the women a lock on the No. 1 seed and home court advantage throughout the ICCAC tournament.
The men’s basketball team is just one game behind first place Des Moines Area Community College and five ahead of North Iowa Community College. At this point, the men’s team is guaranteed at least a No. 2 seed in the tournament, but the Eagles have the potential to grab the number one seed with a win over DMACC on Feb. 26.
Tournament play begins in Johnson Hall on March 1 with the women taking the court at 1 p.m. The men’s game follows at 3 p.m.
The women’s team will be pursuing its tenth national title and the men’s team will go for its fourth.
The games will also be live-streamed on the ICCAC sports network https://www.iccacsportsnetwork.com/kirkwood/.
