The Kirkwood Eagles golf team has started their year off right, showing why they are the number two ranked team in the country securing dominant team and individual performances while also breaking records on the way.
The #2 Eagles started strong with a second place finish in the Mustang Classic on Sept. 7 – 8. Quinn Tinkler put up an impressive 5 birdies on the first day, leading Kirkwood going +1 with Reid Hall after he got a triple bogey in the 13th hole putting his score above par.
The Eagles would score 295 as a team putting them in second place to end the first day.
On the second day, the Eagles would see Aaron Estell shoot -4 and Tate Brunk shooting -1 in the final round of the competition. For the team play all five of the Eagles would score within one stroke of each other where Leo Burger, Nathan Offerman, and Reid Hall would shoot +1 while having Payton Burns, and Quinn Tinkler shoot even giving the Eagles a team score of 290 finishing second place only behind Mount Mercy.
Following the great start, the Eagles would go on to Waterloo to play in the Battle of Waterloo on Sept. 13 – 14. To start the competition Tinkler would set the tone going -7 on the first day. On his first day performance, Tinkler would move on in first place in the tournament and only go -1 on the second day but with a total of -8 on the competition. He would land himself tied for the school record.
“Shooting the score I did, felt like the work I have put in over the past few weeks paid off. But we have only started now so I’m ready for more to come,” Tinkler said.
“But I can’t say it was just me as the team played unreal as well, and can’t wait to see what this year holds for everyone.”
For the team play on the second day Reid Hall would score a total of 210 with Nathan Offerman and Aaron Estell putting up a score of 222, followed by Tate Brunk scoring 223.
Tinkler’s performance alone was enough to put the Eagles 37 strokes above second place dominating the competition and now are looking forward to the NJCAA preview coming up on Sept. 30.
