The Michael J. Gould Rec Center is one of the main hubs at Kirkwood Community for student events and intramural competitions.
The semester has gone well so far for the Rec Center, according to Brett Baumgart, Rec Center supervisor, as they saw a high turnout for flag football and have remained busy despite the nice weather.
However, he said he believes activity there will increase as the semester continues.
In the coming months, the Rec Center will be hosting a co-ed basketball league, singles and doubles tournaments for table tennis and will also be serving as a voting location during the upcoming 2024 election.
On top of increased events and activities, Baumgart said the colder weather will also drive students there in larger numbers.
With increased traffic at the Rec Center comes more wear and tear on the machines. “I’m always looking to update,” Baumgart said. “I saw the one article [in the Communiqué] about the machines and those are 13 years old. Those are something we’re always watching.”
He continued, “That’s probably one of the older things in here because the weight room was all brand new in 2019. Every single thing in there was brand new at the time.”
He added that he works with companies to try and replace cables and pulleys to make them feel new and to keep ahead of the wear and tear.
Baumgart said his goal is to continually offer a wide variety of activities, events and exercise options to make every student’s visit worthwhile.
The Rec Center conducts student surveys to ensure they are keeping students engaged and properly tracking student interest according to Baumgart. They also use this survey to gauge what other machines or activities students are interested in.
Access to the Rec Center is free with a current EagleCard . It offers multiple basketball courts, a walking track and a wide variety of machines.
