With the end of autumn coming up quickly, it’s time for students to start prepping for winter weather.
According to the Iowa Weather website, Cedar Rapids typically experiences its first snowfall from Dec. 4 – 11.
Snow aside, cold snaps can be intense and happen at any time throughout the season, leading to troublesome patches of black ice, car problems and dangerous walking conditions for students and staff who commute on foot or by bus.
Dylan Torgerson, manager of Public Safety at Kirkwood Community College, said, “Public Safety provides a wide range of services to support students on campus. Some of our most popular services include motorist assistance, safety escorts, lost and found and campus-wide emergency notification and response.”
He continued, “For example, if you lock your keys in your car, need a jump start, or require help with a flat tire, we’re here to assist. We also offer safety escorts to and from your vehicle or classes on the main campus if you ever feel unsafe.”
Torgerson stressed, “Public Safety is here 24/7, every day of the year. If you need assistance or have questions related to winter weather on campus, don’t hesitate to call us at 319-398-7777. We’re always ready to help.”
Many students and faculty commute by car to campus, which comes with its own wintertime risks. Torgerson shared that Public Safety often receives calls seeking assistance with car troubles during the cold weather months.
Torgerson said, “During winter weather, our motorist assistance services, such as jump starts and tire inflations, are especially popular. Cold temperatures can drain car batteries and reduce tire pressure, making these services crucial for many. If you’re on the main campus and experience car trouble, give Public Safety a call, and we’ll do our best to help.”
Keeping a few basic items in the car is one way to be prepared when the unexpected happens. Torgerson said, “It’s helpful to keep a few emergency items in your vehicle, such as jumper cables, a winter hat, gloves, and a warm jacket, in case you need them. It’s also smart to check if you have roadside assistance and know how to contact them.”
He added, “If you’re new to snowy climates, a good brush and ice scraper can save you time in the mornings. Before the first snow, make sure your battery, windshield wipers, and tires are all in good condition.”
Although the Winter Weather Outlook offered by the National Weather Service shows the potential for near average conditions in the region throughout the season with drought conditions likely to continue, heavy snowfall events, blizzard conditions, bitter cold snaps and the dreaded polar vortex are all in play as possibilities in Eastern Iowa.
Torgerson advised, “If you must travel during inclement weather, give yourself extra time and check road conditions with the DOT’s 511 website or app.”
Once the snow arrives, students should take additional precautions on campus. Torgerson said, “Winter weather brings snow removal and sometimes large snow piles that can create blind spots around campus. We recommend driving slowly and cautiously to navigate these areas safely.”
He added, “The Grounds team works diligently to clear these spots but some may still be present. Additionally, sidewalks and stairs can become slippery, so please take care when walking and stay alert for slick areas.”
Students can also help when they see areas of concern. Torgerson stressed, “If you notice any slick roadways, parking lots, or sidewalks on campus, please let Public Safety know so we can address it. If there are any slips or falls, please report them to us as soon as possible.”
While it’s important to stay weather aware, it’s also important to stay aware of delays, cancellations, and closings at Kirkwood. Torgerson said, “We encourage all students, faculty and staff to sign up for Kirkwood Alert to stay informed about campus closures or delays.”
